Recovering from a Concussion

What is a Concussion?

A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury (TBI) caused by a blow to the head, a fall, or any event that shakes the brain inside the skull.

Common Causes

  • Sports Injuries: Contact sports like football, rugby, and hockey
  • Falls: Especially in young children and older adults
  • Motor Vehicle Accidents: Including whiplash injuries
  • Physical Assaults: Any direct impact to the head.

Symptoms of a Concussion

  • Physical: headaches, nausea/vomiting, dizziness, blurred or double vision, light or noise sensitivity, drowsiness
  • Cognitive: difficulty concentrating or remembering, confusion, trouble sleeping or sleeping more than usual
  • Emotional: irritability, sadness, anxiety or numbness.

What Physiotherapy Can Do to Help

  • Vestibular Rehabilitation: Targeting dizziness, vertigo, and balance problems.
  • Cervical Spine Rehabilitation: Manual therapy and exercises to restore range of motion and reduce tension.
  • Vision Therapy: Exercises and strategies to manage visual disturbances like blurred vision or difficulty focusing.
  • Gradual Return to Activity: Structured exercise programs that progressively increase physical activity without triggering symptoms. Monitoring and adjusting the intensity of exercise to ensure a safe recovery.
  • Education and Support: Providing information on symptom management, rest strategies, and the importance of gradual return to normal activities.
  • Post-Concussion Syndrome Management: tailored programs to address prolonged symptoms such as persistent headaches, cognitive issues, and other lingering effects.

Prevention Tips

  • Wear Proper Protective Gear: Helmets in sports, seatbelts in vehicles.
  • Education: Learn the signs and symptoms of a concussion.
  • Safe Play Techniques: Especially in contact sports.
  • Home Safety: Minimize fall risks with good lighting, handrails, and non-slip mats.

Long-Term Outlook

Most people recover fully from a concussion, but some may experience prolonged symptoms (post-concussion syndrome). Early intervention and proper management are key to a full recovery. Physiotherapy plays a vital role in the rehabilitation process, helping patients return to their daily activities safely and effectively.
