WHAT IS BENIGN PAROXYSMAL POSITION VERTIGO (BPPV) ?
Benign Paroxysmal Position Vertigo (BPPV) is a common cause of vertigo and is a condition that affects the inner ear. Within the inner ear there are semicircular canals that contain calcium crystals which help detect movement.
In people with BPPV, these crystals have become dislodged which can cause sudden episodes of dizziness with the sensation that the room is spinning around you.
COMMON SYMPTOMS OF BPPV
People can present with the following symptoms:
– Spinning sensation (commonly known as vertigo)
– Light headedness
– Difficulty with balance
– Nausea and vomiting
Particular movements can bring on these symptoms, which can last minutes or days. Some triggers include rolling over in bed, looking up or any movement of the head.
HOW CAN PHYSIOTHERAPY HELP IN THE DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF BPPV?
Physiotherapists are one of the trained professionals that can assist in diagnosing and treating symptoms of BPPV. The treatment includes the use of the Epley manoeuvre, which helps to clear debris of the crystals through the canal. After the treatment, the Physiotherapist will advise to sleep on your non-affected side or sleep with your head propped up on pillows. Once home, try and stay active by walking around the house, rather than lying down. We suggest you do not perform any movements of the head that may provoke symptoms.
